Final post about the mid-term of Current Issues in Teaching course.

The strengths that this course have provided us with so far are that it introduces varieties of tools and activities related to the use of advanced technologies and teaching strategies we can implement in our upcoming classes when we become a teacher. But we lacked the actual materials mentioned in the course for practical use so this could be accounted as a weakness. Writing blogs was easy as always, but task and lesson plan preparations can be mentioned as more difficult. My favourite task was the AI Integrated teaching material. My least favourite one was the Flipped Classroom one as it took too much of our time. My suggestion for improvement would be instruction of beneficial websites more for the use of tasks like these. To the students who will take this course next year, I would tell them to be familiar with preparing lesson plans and websites like Canva or the use of AI like ChatGPT to assist them in their learning and task preparation. I think this will contribute us in t...

AI-integrated teaching material

Hello everyone, in this blog post of mine, I will be reflecting on my experience of preparing an AI-integrated teaching material for the last assignment of our course in this mid-term briefly. We have provided a material incorporating the use of ChatGPT during their writing activity in the material. It is dulely noted in the material that the instruction of ChatGPT is only to provide improvement and guidance for their task, not a resorting source. In other words, they will not learn to use ChatGpt as an AI to use it to do their whole task, but a means of doing their task. The AI provides revision and feedback, so the learners can revise and do revisions on their work and complete the activity. I did this assignment, once again with my friends Başak and Pınar, and I found it quite useful, which I can consider using in my future classes. Here is our material .  And here is our assure model based lesson. plan .

Creating an AR/VR integrated teaching material

AR (Augmented Reality) and VR (Virtual Reality) are immersive technologies that enhance language learning by creating engaging, interactive experiences. AR presents digital demonstrations onto the real world, such as 3D objects or animations, while VR places learners in fully virtual environments. In language classes, AR can make vocabulary and grammar lessons more engaging  by integrating visual and interactive activities, while VR allows learners to practice real life conversations in virtual environments, such as cafes or marketplaces. These technologies increase motivation, retention, and language skills. However, they also have challenges, including high costs for tools like VR headsets and the AR. Also, teachers may require specialized training to integrate these tools into their classroom practice, and some students might feel overwhelmed by the immersive nature of VR. Despite these constraints, AR and VR have great potential to prevail traditional language classrooms when i...

Flipped classroom

The flipped classroom approach reverses traditional teaching by having students study instructional materials, like videos or readings, at home before class, freeing up class time for interactive activities. In language classes, this allows students to focus on communicative skills, such as speaking and listening, while teachers provide individualized support and feedback. Flipped classroom technique promotes learning and independent study, but it relies on students’ discipline and access to technology, which can be deceiving. While ideal for real-world language use, it requires significant preparation from teachers and might be less effective for beginners without fundamental knowledge. When it comes to our assignment, my peers were Başak and Pınar, from the same class of mine. For our flipped classroom assignment, from the material our instructor Mustafa Polat assigned us with, we chose the unit My Town. We have used 10 places from it for vocabulary items to use in our flipped classr...

Our material based on ASSURE model and use of corpus

Greetings my fellow readers. Today, I will be mentioning a groupwork I have done along with Yavuz Selim Özdemir and Güneş Kesen for our lesson, Current Issues in Teaching. For the topic of this blog, our instructor has assigned us a task, in which we were supposed to prepare a lesson plan and a set of activities that includes the use of a corpus based on the ASSURE model, which we learned in the prior lessons. For this task, we were also assigned to use a unit from the prep. school English Student Book. We have chosen the Unit 18, Digital Era for our lesson plan and activity design. We have decided to base our material upon the use of connectors, allowing students to explore these connectors through corpus and the activites we have prepared. These activities that we have prepared include self-preparing of a few sentences through corpus, which improves learner autonomy, use of connectors in different parts of sentences, which provides the contemplation of context and placement of connec...

Current Issues in Teaching

Hello stranger. I am Ozan Kuram, a student in English Language Teaching department of Marmara University, currently a junior. In this blog, I will be sharing some blogs of mine about the course I am having in this term, Current Issues in Teaching, instructed by Mustafa Polat. Mainly, these blogs will be about the tasks we will be instructed upon, regarding the content of the course. The course is mainly about, as its name also suggests, the current issues in teaching, regarding the technology and its usefulness, adaptation and effect on education. It concerns the problems we, as the future teachers, might have in future and how we can adapt technology as a solution and a convenient tool into our teaching. My expectations are not much different from last year's course Educational Technologies in ELT. I want to learn new techniques to integrate technology into my future classrooms. As we started our new term this year, I have been facing problems regarding the use of techonology in o...

My overview about this semester course

In terms of my opinion of technology's integration to education, my view hasn't changed at all, as I was already in favour of adapting technology into teaching. However, throughout the lessons we had in this mid term, I have not supported the fundamental of this view of mine, but also gained some other perspectives to enhance it. For example, for the "Creating a Digital Story" task, I discovered a new app with advice of my friend Selen, I discovered a new app for collaborative painting website, Magma, which enforced the collaboration of our work in our group for the given task as well as collaborative writing and reading. I also enjoyed my time drawing a lot, so I can consider that the digital story task was my favourite. Not only that, we changed the tone of our voice for the roleplay part as well and had many laughters during the voice recording part. As the least favourite part, I can say that it was the last one, AI interview part. I normally have a better app for...
